The Written Previews
South Florida @ Louisville -16.5
South Florida travels to a Louisville team looking to bounce back from last week’s loss.
After their loss last week to Rutgers, Louisville looked like their title hopes were gone. But on Saturday, the light was turned back on by losses by Texas, Auburn and Cal as well as Florida squeaking out a win. The Cardinals are still in the BCS hunt even though they are ranked #10. Louisville knows that the teams in front of them have a tough schedule ahead of them. There is a chance that Louisville can sneak back into the picture. The Cardinals know they have to win out and win out easily. Louisville will not take South Florida lightly.
Take the Cardinals to get back on the winning track this week. This is a revenge game for Louisville, and they will take full advantage of it.
Bears -7 @ NY Jets
The Bears stay in NY for the second straight week to try and get another road victory.
If one really thinks about this, this could be a home game for the Bears. This will be the second straight week on the same field. The only difference is they are playing in New York not Chicago. Another difference is they are playing the New York Jets instead of the Giants. The Bears got back on their winning ways with a big victory Sunday night against the Giants. The Jets on the other hand are coming off a huge victory over the Pats. Both teams are on a high but the Jets are not a top notch team like the Bears. Their victory over the Pats could throw them for a loop because they could still be on that high which really isn’t a good thing to bring into the next game. The Bears defense is a lot tougher than the Pats and that will be the main difference in this game. Both offenses have been unsteady the last few weeks but the defense of the Bears for the most part have stayed strong.
Take the Bears to continue their winning ways. The defense will win the game for the Bears this week.
San Jose State @ Hawaii -24
Hawaii keeps scoring over 60 points and there is no reason to believe that they will all of sudden stop scoring. Last week they only had 9 points after the 1st quarter and still put up over 60. They will score 60 and cover the 24 because..
San Jose State is not going to score over 24 points because they are not that good. Period! I know they put up a great fight against Boise State but that was at home and Boise tends to play at the level of their opponent. I saw San Jose State lay an egg at Nevada, their only score came from and end of the half Nevada mistake. San Jose State does not have the offensive power to stay within the number.
Hawaii will be ready and realistically we should thank San Jose State and Boise because this line would have been higher if Boise State would have blown out the Spartans. Because the game was close the line is only 24 and Hawaii has taken notice of the almost upset last week.
New Mexico @ BYU -25
BYU is far and away the best team in the Mountain West and will once again destroy another weak MWC team this week in Provo.
BYU QB John Beck is the real deal and has been given credit for the great season BYU is having. Give him credit but the real reason the Cougars are for real is that they now can play defense.
BYU has given up only 10 points per game in conference and scoring over 40 each game, close to 50 at home. New Mexico will fall behind early and then start thinking about winning the last game against San Diego State because there is too much talent difference in this game. BYU rolls.
Nevada -20 @ LA Tech
We hate to lay this many points on the road and Nevada has struggled against LA Tech but Nevada is on a roll and LA Tech will be tired physically and emotionally after the shellacking they took at Hawaii.
Some will also point to the fact that Nevada will be looking ahead to the showdown with Boise State next week. Don't buy into that theory. Coach Ault will have the Wolfpack ready to play.
Nevada is a good running team that can play defense. They are ranked nationally at the top of the Turnover Charts. Teams that can run the ball, take care of the ball, play defense, and cause turnovers are a good road team. Take the Pack to cover the 20 points and then get ready for Boise State.
San Jose State/Hawaii Over 74
The books keep putting a number up and Hawaii keeps flying over the total. They almost have gone over the total themselves the past month or so. Hawaii is a perfect 7-0 ATS on the OVER plays in conference this year.
San Jose State is the opposite and if this game was played on the main land we would rethink the pick. No one except for Alabama has been able to slow down Hawaii this year. Last time we checked Alabama has a better defense than San Jose State.
The Spartans will fall behind by 28 in the first half and will be forced to pass the ball on every down. Hawaii will feed off of this and the game will once again fly over the total.
Chargers +3 @ Broncos
The Chargers travel to Denver this week. The winner takes over the lead in the AFC West.
Offense vs. Defense in this one. The offense of the Chargers versus the defense of the Broncos. Everyone knows that the Broncos have a great defense but it can be beat. Take the Colts for example. They exploited the defense of the Broncos with their passing game, and look for the Chargers to do the same. Rivers is becoming the main facet of the offense. He is throwing the ball all over the field to many different receivers. Then when he gets tired, they have this one guy who is pretty good, L.T., maybe you have heard of him. L.T. broke Jim Brown’s record last week for most TD’s in a 5-game span (15 TD’s). The Broncos won’t be able to stop both Rivers and L.T. Whichever one they do stop (if they can), the other one will have a big game and be the main difference in the game. The Broncos will be able to score some points against a Charger’s defense that is struggling without Merriman. But the offense of the Chargers will step up just like they did last week against the Bengals.
Take the Chargers as they take over the lead in the AFC West.
Michigan @ Ohio St -7
The game everyone has waited for is finally here. #2 Michigan at #1 Ohio St.
Are there any other words but “wow”? Talk about a great game. Yeah, everybody knows that Ohio St and Texas played earlier this year as 1 and 2, but it was no match as Ohio St won easily. This game is very evenly matched. Both defenses are in the top 5 even though the edge goes to Michigan. Both running backs are solid and both teams have top wide receivers. The difference maker in this game will be the heisman favorite Smith. Smith will show everybody in the nation why he deserves the heisman. He will beat Michigan with his arm, with his legs and just with his playmaking skills in general. This will be a great game to watch but Troy Smith and the Buckeyes will come out victorious.
Take the Buckeyes.
