RGJ Picks

New York Jets +9.5 @ New England

We are going with the J-E-T-S this weekend because road teams are an amazing 6-2 in this round the past two years and we think Jets coach Eric Mangini will devise a plan to win this game.

I know everyone will be backing the Patriots and with their history who can blame them but the last time New York came to town they were winners and this time could be more of the same.

Expect Pennington to be the difference. He will make plays and not force plays when they are not there. New York will be able to contain Brady and if they can win the turnover war then Brady and Company will be one and done.

Pennington will do enough to keep this game within one score and the Jets will have an opportunity to pull the upset in the 4th quarter. Take the 9 points with the Jets.

Free Pick from Doc's

Take Western Michigan +7 over Cincinnati (International Bowl Saturday 12:00 pm ESPN2) The Cats played in the better conference this year but has been in disarray since Coach Mark Dantonio left the program to take over @ Michigan State. They hired Central Michigan Coach Brain Kelley and amazingly he will coach them in this game, despite only being involved with the program for less then a month. He is not familiar with their style and thus I expect the Bearcats to struggle with new formations and so forth. This will be a much closer game then what the experts predict, because the Broncos played a difficult non-conference schedule. This included xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" / Indiana, Virginia, and Florida State. They play defense and that will allow them to keep this game close.

Thoughts and Ponders:

Happy New Year and welcome back to Thoughts and Ponders. The Doctor and Thehooks book hope you had a great holiday season and hope the 2007 Thoughts and Ponders is just as good if not better than 2006!

First and foremost, can you say WOW? The bowl season has been a good one. Great comebacks, last second field goals, hook and ladders, and even a statue of liberty! WOW!

3 days till the National Championship game! Can Florida knock off Ohio St?

I will tell you this, LSU may be the best team in the nation right now. That’s right I said it.

Notre Dame is now winless in a bowl game for 13 years.

Brady Quinn played horrible in his last game at ND. Yeah he threw two touchdowns but only threw for 148 yards. Do you think his NFL draft stock went down?

Quite a few underdogs have won a bowl game this year. 10 to be precise. Including 2 double digit underdogs! Congrats to Kentucky and Iowa.

A lot of people thought Michigan was going to beat USC to prove they deserved a national championship chance. Well, people must have forgotten that USC could have been in the national championship.

I have to say it again, Hook and Ladder and the Statue of Liberty!

Does Boise St. deserve a national title shot being undefeated?

They might not but have they proven to the nation they are for real? I know the people in Oklahoma believe it now.

Does anyone care about the International Bowl or the GMAC Bowl? Why are they played on the 6th and 7th? They both should be December games.

Congrats to Vince Young and Demeco Ryans for their Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards. I’m sure the Texans thought somebody else would win the DROTY award. If it makes them feel any better, Reggie Bush finished 5th!

The Merriman/Taylor talk is kind of funny. I agree with Taylor saying that someone who has supposedly taken steriods doesn’t deserve an award. But Merriman’s rebuttals was good as well. I guess we will let the voters make the final decision.

Of course LT deserved the MVP. That was as obvious as the ball dropping in New York on New Years Eve.

This playoff season is going to be a good one. In all honesty, any team is possible of winning the Super Bowl.

Can the Chiefs knock off the Colts this week? If the Colts don’t stop LJ it could easily happen.

Nick Saban gave up on the Dolphins rather quickly didn’t he?

Does anybody care about T.O. anymore? What a pain in the ass! What team will he be playing for and complaining about next year?

Brett Favre come back for one more year?

Are the Bears the best team in the NFC?

Can the Saints be the Cinderella story?

Can the Seahawks make it two years in a row?

Can Tom Brady find the magic to get the Pats back to the promise land?

Comeback Player of the Year: Chad Pennington or Drew Brees?

1st pick in the draft goes to the Raiders this year, will they take somebody they need or take another CB?

Our prayers and thoughts go out to Darrent William’s family and friends as well as to the Broncos. Hopefully they catch the people who did this and do things to them I can’t write about. It won’t bring back a good player and a great human being but justice will be served. The Doctor’s heart is with the William’s family.

Well folks, 2007 is off to a quick start and hopefully it is a good one as well. Enjoy the playoffs and the national championship game and I’ll see you next week. This is the Doctor signing out.
