Stat of the Week:

Typo week, it should have said:

Iowa is 14-2 ATS as a Double Digit Favorite under Coach Ferentz. They play Ball State on September 3rd.

Ball State is 3-9 ATS as a road dog and 3-7 ATS va the Big Ten.

Thehooks Book Free Picks went 3-0 last week. Vegas Vic went 1-0 and the Meathook went 2-0 in the ezine. The Meathook took a hit on the total for the Colts game but that was only placed on the site.

NFC Preview

Dr. D previews the NFC

1. Philadelphia Eagles

They were thought to be the team to beat last year with the addition of Owens to an already solid team. They finally got past the NFC championship but were beaten by the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They should be glad they got that NFC championship monkey off their back and they should have a great chance to get back to the big game. But the off-season has brought a lot of turmoil into Eagles camp. Owens complaining about his contract brought complaints and plenty of disgust from his fellow teammates. Owens at least showed up to training camp on time but has been a distraction. Westbrook held out for about a week but eventually showed up to camp. For a team that is favored to go back to the Super Bowl and possibly win it all, they are far from showing anything but team unity. You don’t see the Pats doing anything like this. The Eagles need to get their heads straight and put all their differences aside if they want to repeat their performance from last year. If they do, they have no problem getting back to the big game.

2. Minnesota Vikings

No more Randy Moss. Usually when you lose one of the best WR’s in the league you would think your team would struggle but the Vikings might actually be better off without him. They have a solid WR core that will need to step up as a unit. Burleson had a break out year last year and will step into the number one receiver spot with Moss’s departure. Culpepper had a great year and might have been the best QB in the league if it wasn’t for Manning and his record breaking year. They picked up some defense which they needed horribly. Their defense wasn’t as bad as the Colts but it wasn’t much better. If their defense steps up and their wide receivers step up, the Vikings have a shot at winning it all. The main question for the Vikings this year is can they find a running game? That question may be the difference between a 9-7 season or a 12-4 season.

Thoughts and Ponders from Dr. D:

Pharmacy

There are drugs all over the place in today's sports. We aren't just talking about football and wrestling, we are talking baseball and even Nascar now! It is getting ridiculous to think about all the drugs that are going around. Let's not get too naive and believe drugs have never been in sports till just recently. They have been there all along but they have just sprung out all over the place today.

Everyone is looking for a little head start over everyone else, or a little boost that will make him or her just that much quicker or stronger than the next person. That little edge that will make you the first pick instead of the 3rd or 4th. The frightening part about it is, it's not just in pro sports anymore. College kids are using it to impress scouts so they can play pro ball. High school kids are looking for that edge to make it to their top school.

Soon, preschool kids will pop pills so they can be the top dodgeball players in kindergarten. It sounds funny but god knows, it may be happening soon. Well, maybe not preschool but you understand where I'm coming from here

These kids looking for that edge didn't come up with the idea on their own of course. When you look in professional sports, everyone is getting bigger, faster, and stronger. A high school student sees someone on TV and thinks they want to be just like the pros and will do whatever it takes to become like that person on the playing field. Scary part is that god given talent doesn't always get you to the promise land and that is very sad.

Am I saying that any person who pops pills can make it to the big leagues? Of course not because you still have to have that god given talent to take you somewhere. The part that gets bad is that the people that have the god given talent are popping the pills to give them that edge and the people that don't have that talent needed to make it think they can get the talent by using a substance. Popping pills and injecting roids may be giving that certain person that edge now but in the long run, it is ruining sports and most importantly, it is ruining that person. To everyone using a substance please stop. For everyone thinking about using a substance to get that edge, don't do it. Don't ruin the game and don't ruin yourself.

I am Dr. D and I will chat at you next week in Thehooks Book.
