Coaching in the NFL
Does it really matter?

This is Dr. D. signing in from Thehooks book, bringing you thoughts and ponders for this week in football from www.thehooksfootballpicks.com. Actually it’s only one major thought this week but I needed to get this off my chest after watching some sub par performances in the NFL this week.

Now everyone knows when it comes to college football, coaching means a lot between a win and loss. But how about it the NFL? Does coaching really determine the outcome in the game? Some minds would say no, others may disagree. A lot of people believe that most of the game’s final outcome depends on the players and not the coaching. Me, I tend to disagree. Coaching may actually mean more in the NFL than in college. Ok, that may be pushing it but I still believe coaching is a major factor in outcomes of games as well as seasons. Let me explain:

Now in this article, I plan on using no names or teams. I am going to use examples that I’ve seen over the past few years and even in the past week. Now most of you should know what team I’m talking about and the coach by just the examples given. So once again, no names or team names will be used, you just have to figure it out on your own.

Why is coaching important to me? The big reason would be motivation. Now all teams have motivation but that extra little bit a team may need lies in the eyes and actions of the coach. Look at this past week in the NFL. Two teams who were just down right horrible last year came out with big victories in week 1. Is it because they got new players that made all the difference? NO! No, it has to do with the coaching. Both these coaches came in with a positive attitude and a new outlook on a new season and basically told his players, last year is gone, we can do something special this year if you just believe in me. That positive attitude and style fires up players. Even if you are 35 years old and been in the league for 13 years and a new coach comes in after a dismal season with a style and attitude that just exudes winning and positivity, you will get fired up yourself. There were two defensive players that had almost as many sacks in one game last week than they did a year ago for the entire season. Motivation was passed on to the players from the new coach and it showed. Now realize that these two teams that couldn’t beat a high school team last year, didn’t go out and get new players. In fact, they may not even have a big superstar on their respected teams. They didn’t have a star quarterback or running back that can break a game wide open with one quick burst or pass. They have a bunch of good players that needed that extra bit of motivation to make them realize, if they play together and be positive, those good players can make a great team.

The last paragraph talked about positive motivation by new coaches with teams that don’t have a bunch of superstars on their teams. Now there are teams that are stacked with some great players but their coaches lack the motivation to make the team great. Again, I won’t mention names but there is one coach in the NFC that has a good quarterback, wide receivers that can catch anything, a 2nd year running back who is a beast and a future hall of famer who can come in off the bench and play wide receiver or running back. This team should dominate on offense. There shouldn’t be one defense out there that can stop this team from scoring almost every time they touched the ball. These players are all veterans and have been playing together for quite a few years now so that adage that they are a young team that needs to get used to each other doesn’t apply. But for some reason, this is the most underachieving team in the league. They have pro bowlers every year yet they can’t seem to win all the time. I’m not saying this is a 16-0 team that should destroy every team in their path but at the same time I’m saying there is no way in hell this is an 8-8 team that struggles to make the playoffs. They have too strong of an offense to be this bad. Plus their defense isn’t the greatest but it’s at least a middle of the pack defense. But why is this team struggling every year? Why did this team get beat in week 1 by a team that won two games last year? Injuries? NO! Bad weather? NO! The other team is better? On this day it wasn’t the players that were better, it was the coaching. There is no motivation on this team. The coach has maybe one of the most explosive offenses in the NFC if not the whole NFL but that does nothing when there is no motivation. This is a team that should challenge to go to the super bowl every year but the coach is just satisfied making the playoffs. I’ll tell you what, if these two teams that played in the first week switched coaches, it would make all the difference in the world. The team that won 2 games last year would have a coach that has no motivation for his players and they would struggle to win 2 games this year. But if the multi talented team had a coach that was fired up and motivated to take this team to the top, the team would win at least 12 to 13 games and challenge for the championship. All I’m saying is a little motivation goes a long way.

Motivation is major factor in everybody’s way of life. So it doesn’t matter if you are 10 playing pee wee football or a 20 year veteran in the NFL, the right motivation goes a long way. My belief is that any team, no matter how many superstars or pro bowlers it has on its roster, can become a great team with the right coach with the right motivation. There is one team out there that has won the championship the last few years.....hmm, think that has anything to do with coaching???

This is Dr. D signing out from Thehooks book. Let’s hope there is some better performances next week in the NFL or I might have to start using names when I’m bashing people. Remember we all need that right motivation in our lives, so my motivation to you is, don't be afraid to sit back, relax and enjoy the games this weekend!

Just The Facts:

We submit all our picks to the National Sports Monitor. Sometimes they do not have all our lines but you will find the percentage we have on our site and on their site almost identical.

We submit our TOP plays to the Ultimate Handicapping Challenge and you will only find our top plays there.

We submit most of the picks to Gurutracker but if the lines are different than the National Sports Monitor we will not submit the picks. Percentage should be close.

With that said we are in the top 5 in college and somewhere half buried in the NFL so far.

We were crushed in the NFL last week. I had over 20 emails with some Thoughts and Ponders I would have not liked to receive. I felt all their pain and hope to get this ship righted. Food for thought, no one email me and said thanks for kicking ass in the college games. BUT I do understand, as a service it is better not to receive emails because then your customers are happy. We are working to fix the problem.
