The Reno Gazette Journal Pick

San Jose State @ Nevada -12.5

San Jose State comes to Reno on a 4 game win streak. People are talking that they have turned the corner. I have even mentioned that they just might be legit. Stop! Upon further review Nevada will squash all these rumors Saturday at McKay Stadium.

San Jose State has won 4 in a row at home. McKay won't be so kind as the 0-2 WolfPack look to get their first WAC win this weekend.

Nevada has played the tougher schedule and NO Stanford and San Diego State are not good Spartan fans. The bye came at a good time to heal all injured players and for the Pack to regroup to make a push in the WAC race.

Nevada will be able to run the ball and if Hubbard is given the chance, let me say that again, if Hubbard is given the chance, he will top the 150 yard mark. Oh, by the way, the frosh Fogger is real good. He might go for a couple of scores. Did I mention the passing attack of the Pack? Rowe has been the leader and will get the Pack back on track.

Defensively the Pack has made plays when needed throughout the year. Even in defeat they made enough big plays in the 4th quarter to give the team a chance to win in Hawaii.

If you are a trend bettor then you have got to love the WolfPack this weekend. Nevada is 4-0 SU and ATS vs the Spartans the last 4 years. Nevada is 8-0 SU and ATS the past 2 and half years at home. Nevada is 5-1 ATS this year.

The kick off is set for 4 pm, just about the time the temperature starts to drop. The weather will not be too bad but still 15 to 25 degrees cooler and the altitude will also help Nevada. Wolfpack by more than 2 touchdowns.

Thoughts and Ponders:

Once again the Doctor is in the house and he brings you this week’s Thoughts and Ponders.

The fight last week between Miami and Florida International was ridiculous. There was no need for that. Miami is upset about how poorly they have played this year and Florida International was all about pushing their buttons. Then BOOM, a brawl for the ages. A brawl that was ugly and puts a black mark on college football.

I saw things happen in that brawl that I have only seen in gangster movies or street fights. Swinging helmets, stomping on people after you throw them down, just to name a few things. There was even a guy on Florida International that was injured and on crutches out there swinging his crutch. Ugly, very very ugly.

That game shouldn’t have been allowed to continue and in fact both teams shouldn’t be allowed to play for the rest of the year. That’s what I think.

Larry Coker, I think your job is in jeopardy and after last week’s disgrace; you should have no job this week according to me!

Ok, enough about that, let’s get on to some football.

T.O. three touchdown catches last week. Stop your complaining!

Philip Rivers is the real deal. He is getting comparisons to Dan Marino. That may be pushing it a little bit, but Rivers is on fire right now.

The reason I don’t see the comparison between Rivers and Marino is one little thing. Well, maybe more than one but Marino won without a star running back. Yeah, he had good running backs, but can you name one of them? Can you name the running back from the 1984 or 1985 Dolphins? If you can, give yourself 5 points. I’m a huge Dolphins fan and I don’t even know who the running back is.

Who is the running back for Rivers? Oh yeah that’s right it’s L.T. He’s pretty good. Much better than anything the Dolphin’s and Marino had.

The Saints are for real.

All the Panthers needed to become that Super Bowl contender again was Steve Smith. They haven’t lost since he’s been back in the lineup. It’s amazing how much one person can do to a team’s moral. Take note T.O.

Lions, Buccs and Titans won last week....I guess no winless teams this year. Wait, we still have the hapless Raiders. There is still a chance, a good one at that.

The Cardinals! Are you kidding me on Monday night? Speechless....

Broncos may be the most boring team to watch in the NFL but they may be one of the best.

Larry Johnson’s average per carry this year is almost 2.5 yards less than last year. Do you think Willie Roaf is missed right now?

The Colts...let’s see if the week off brings back this high powered offense that we have yet to see this year.

Brady Quinn’s Heisman run continues this week against the Bruins of U.C.L.A.

U.S.C. may be the worst #2 or #3 team in the nation. They could lose to Notre Dame, Cal, and Oregon. My prediction they will lose at least two of those games.

People are talking about a Michigan/Ohio St national championship game. Won’t happen. They play each other at the end of November. That game could decide who plays for the national championship.

So who is the best team in the SEC? LSU, Auburn, Florida? LSU lost to Auburn and Florida but Auburn beat Florida but lost to Arkansas. So does this mean Arkansas is the best team?

Still nobody is talking about West Virginia.

Feel for Adrian Peterson. You have to. His dad watching him for the first time since he was 12 and you break your collarbone on your last run. Maybe his college career was supposed to end that way. On a touchdown run with his dad watching for the first time in 10 years. Don’t risk it and come back for the bowl game. Get yourself healthy and look forward to either your senior season or an early NFL career.

Did Boise St. prove to be a BCS contender on Sunday night? NOPE!

I don’t even think Boise is the best team in the WAC. How about Hawaii? How about Nevada? Ok maybe not Nevada but you have to put Hawaii up there!

Ok I may be bashing on Nevada in this last thought but you have to admit they may be one of the best 0-2-conference team in the nation. I’m serious, don’t laugh!

Folks, that’s it for Thoughts and Ponders this week. Hope to see you next week. This is the Doctor and Thehooks book signing out!
