Stat of the Week:

Boise State had their WAC winning streak stopped by Fresno State last week. Next impressive streak on the line is owned by USC. The Bulldogs are coming, can they make it two in a row.

Penn State

Since the readers of Reno have been enjoying the information for free we thought that we would send this out to Thehooks Book customers. We are 7-4 with this pick.

College 4 HOOK

Penn State -7 @ Michigan State

Coach Paterno has his team in position to win the Big Ten. Take that all you Paterno bashers from last year. Michigan State looked like a contender during the first part of the season but has fallen upon hard times lately. The Spartan offense still strikes fear in most opponents but will run into a buzz saw this weekend against the physical defense of the Lions.

Penn States defense will be able to contain the offense of Michigan State while the Spartans defense will not be able to contain the Lions offense. Many will look at this game as the Penn State defense against the passing game of the Spartans. I think the game will come down to the ever improving offense of the Lions against the weak Spartan defense. Look for Robinson to have a big day and the Lions to roll.

Dr. D's Thoughts And Ponders

Thehooks book brings you the Doctor giving you his opinions on the past week in football. No need for a second opinion here.

How about Mike Tice getting taken out on the sideline? Tore his MCL during that collision. Wonder when was the last time he took a shot like that on the football field?

Even with Coach Tice hurting his knee, the Vikings pulled off a big time upset over the Giants. They used his injury as motivation. Not really but makes the story more interesting. This might be a team people start to worry about.

People are saying the Vikings are better off without Culpepper running the offense. They are saying he was the mistake maker and one of the main reasons that team was struggling. So Brad Johnson steps in at quarterback and they start winning. Hey, they didn’t beat the Giants last week because of Johnson. When you return a punt, kickoff and INT back for a touchdown, you need to be thanking your special teams for the win not the quarterback!

Another big time upset was Favre and the Packers going into the Georgia Dome and beating the Falcons rather easily. Favre still has something left in the tank. This is another team people won’t take lightly.

Last week we discussed the best team in the NFC. So who is it? Panthers and Seahawks, that’s my choices.

Did anybody watch the wind bowl at Solider Field on Sunday? That was unbelievable. When that wind gust came up and almost blew the kicker over, I laughed out loud at the bar. People looked at me strange but what else is new. Then he gets his balance and his kick ends up 25 yards wide of the goal post. He had a smile on his face when he walked off the field. Hey, could you blame him? It was like the ball was on a string. I had a smile on my face too.

108-yard touchdown…enough said.

The 49ers completed one pass that game…ONE! I know it was windy but one pass?

Bama went down last week at the hands of the LSU Tigers…1 down, 2 to go in the ranks of the unbeaten.

If you thought K.C. had guts to make that call a few weeks ago against the Raiders and go for the game winning touchdown with 5 seconds left instead of the game tying field goal, then what do you think about the Bucs? Let’s go for the 2-point conversion instead of the extra point. Those are great plays when they are made but what if they don’t? I guess we will have to wait for somebody to make a gutsy call and fail to see what people say.

Fresno St. stopped Boise St’s 31-game WAC winning streak last Thursday. No longer are the Broncos the best team in the WAC. Unfortunately for Fresno, they don’t get to celebrate their win too much cause this week they travel to Southern Cal to take on the Trojans. Hey, it’s just like life; some weeks you are on Cloud 9 but other weeks, people will bring you right back down to reality.

Game of the Week: Tough call this week but I’m going with Ohio St. @ Michigan in the Big House. Over 100,000 people will be at that game. That alone makes it the game of the week.

A new addition to the regular Thoughts and Ponders this week is Question of the Week. Some questions will be serious; others might make you question my state of mind. You’ll just have to stick around to find out.

Question of the Week: Is this the week the Colts finally lose?

Well folks, the Doctor is signing out from Thehooks book. Enjoy your weekend and remember, follow your dreams even if your dream is to sit on the couch all weekend and watch football.
