Top NFL Running Backs

Dr. D previews the to Running Backs

1. LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers:

Easily the top back in the league. This man can break a long run for a touchdown, or run up the gut for the tough 5 yards or even make the catch out of the backfield and get extra yards. Tomlinson can do it all. If you were to build the perfect back, Tomlinson would be the model everyone would follow. Strong, fast, smart and an extremely hard worker. With his game breaking ability, he takes a lot of pressure off the quarterback and that is one reason Drew Brees was a pro bowler last year.

2. Priest Holmes, Kansas City Chiefs:

If he can shake off the injury bug that has plagued him for the last few years, he could be the top back in the NFL again. He has a lot of qualities as Tomlinson has but he is a little bigger and might be a tougher guy to tackle. One thing that makes Holmes so special is his touchdown making quality. Anytime he gets near the end zone, his eyes light up. He smells the end zone better than anybody in the league hands down. Hey, he has stats to prove it. Plus, it never hurts to run behind one of the best offensive lines in the league.

3. Jamal Lewis, Baltimore Ravens:

The hardest guy to tackle in the league without a doubt. Any defender that tries to take on Lewis head on, will most likely find themselves flat on their backs. It would be interesting to see Jamal and Ray go one on one in practice...wonder what that hit would sound like? The main question would be can he find his game from 2003? Last year his mind was anywhere but in the game with all his legal problems plus having a horrible passing game didn’t help either. A few months in prison made him stronger both physically and mentally and the passing game has gotten better. Another 2,000 yard season might be pushing it but he should have a solid year.

Others to watch out for:

Clinton Portis, Washington Redskins:

Can he regain what he did in Denver? If so, watch out.

Willis McGahee, Buffalo Bills:

Now he is the man. He had somewhat of a breakout year last year. Wonder what he can do playing the whole year?

Edgerrin James, Indianapolis Colts:

Can get you yards running the ball or catching it. A solid running back in the league.

Shaun Alexander, Seattle Seahawks:

Another running back who smells the end zone. Question his heart.

Thoughts and Ponders from Dr. D:

Dr. D signing in from Thehooks Book bringing you thoughts and ponders for this week in the NFL.

We all know Antonio Gates had a great year last year, record breaking even. But he has no excuse for not showing up to training camp on time. He had a breakthrough season last year. YIPPEE! Who Cares! So did Peyton Manning but he showed up to camp on time. You are a third year tight end who is hurting your team because you couldn’t show up to camp on time. He has to sit out the last two preseason games and also the season opener. Unless your name is Tony Gonzalez, you have no right to be a tight end complaining about your contract and money. Just play the game!

How about Demarcus Ware on Monday night for the Cowboys. The rookie was more like a God. He had 3 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, an interception as well as a fumble recovery. And it wasn’t like he was playing against some third stringers. He was starting the game against opening day starters some of whom are pro bowlers. This kid could be a force this year. The best part of the whole thing was Ware thought he could have done better. He gave himself an 8 out of 10. I’m sure most of the other judges gave him at least a 9.5. There is always one judge that thinks it wasn’t that great.

Hey another first round holdout signed: Adam “Pac-Man” Jones. Once Cedric Benson signs, we can all throw a party.

Could you imagine if you acted like some of these first round draft choices? Imagine if you were hired for a job that anyone else in the world would die for. But you decide what they are offering you just isn’t good enough. Do you think they would work with you? Yeah, they would work with you by seeing how far and how hard they can throw your ass out on the streets and get somebody else.

McNabb has said he doesn’t need to be friendly and talk to Owens off the field to be successful on the field. But they do need to get some practice together considering Owens has been hurt or complaining or in the Bahamas. Wow, that sounds like a great plan doesn’t it? Maybe somebody should pinch McNabb and wake him from Fantasy World and bring him back to reality. Hey, I hope they can work well on the field together without being friendly towards each other when the game is through, they are fun to watch. But how likely is this to happen? Think of somebody you don’t get along with outside of work. But since you work together, I’m sure you are just buddy-buddy with this guy in the office, right?

Thoughts and Prayers go out to Thomas Herrion’s family and friends as well as the 49ers organization and the NFL. Doesn’t matter if Herrion was a pro bowler or a guy just trying to make the team, this is a big loss for the NFL.

This is Dr. D signing out for this week. Catch you next week in Thehooks Book.
