Febuary 4, 2006 Issue #64 Weekly Publication Table of Contents: Super Bagel Dr. D’s Thoughts And Ponders Since the readers of Reno have been enjoying the information for free we thought that we would send this out to Thehooks Book customers. We are 13-8 with this pick. Since we have not been able to use the word Bowl with Super on our radio show we have now named this game the Super Bagel. Pittsburgh has won three road games to advance to Super Bagel while the Seahawks defeated Washington 20-10 on Divisional Weekend, and easily handled Carolina 34-14 in the NFC Championship Game. Both teams have arrived thanks to great run defenses and quality quarterback play. We expect both teams to gear up to stop the offensive run game leaving the game up to the quarterbacks. So the question is do you like Ben or Matt better and which one would you put your money on? We are going with the man who never seems to lose and who we think provides more leadership than the other. Big Ben has been able to overcome his hand injury and quite simply knows how to win. Matt has played great and we expect him to continue to put up solid numbers but we like the chances of Pittsburgh to confuse him and cause a couple of key turnovers to change the complexion of the game. So we are going with the Steelers to win by more than 4 points because of better quarterback play. Another reason that we like them is that they come from the tougher conference and have beaten 3 very good football teams to get here and oh by the way, all on the road. Seattle had to beat a weak Washington at home and then soundly defeated a good Carolina team again at home. The question we have pondered was Carolina out of gas or was Seattle that good? It really does not matter; Pittsburgh has gone through the ranks and now will finally get the championship that has slipped away from them over the years. So are the points too much? Three of the last four super bagels have been decided by a field goal but the ten super bagles before that were all decided by more than 5 points. We expect the old trend to prevail and the Steelers to win by more that the 4 points. Prop Bet of the Week: Take two chances on the person to score first. Big Ben is at 18 to 1 and Heath Miller at 12 to 1. We can see a score for either one off play action near the end zone or on a scramble. Big Ben could also take it over the top on a sneak. There are better options but for the odds we like these two players. Welcome to the Super Bowl Version of Thoughts and Ponders. This week will just be a look at the big game and all the hype that goes with it. Next week, the year's final version of Thoughts and Ponders will contain a look back at the whole season. Sincerely, The Doctor At the beginning of the year, how many people had the Steelers vs. the Seahawks in the Super Bowl? I'm going to say the numbers will be small. Is it me or is everyone overlooking the Seahawks. This is a different Steelers team this year. Yeah, they still have a great running game but this year it's running back by commitee. Their defense is strong like always as well. But what about Big Ben? They are letting him throw the ball this year. This Steeler's team has some offense this year! They could put up 35 in the game! Are we making a mountain out of ant hill over Steven's comments about Porter? Either way you look at it whether he was starting crap or just giving him respect, Stevens should have kept his mouth shut. Don't piss off a guy like Porter. Here is a new prop bet for all the sports books: First time Stevens lines up against Porter. Will Stevens block Porter or will Stevens end up flat on his back? Has everyone forgotten about the best RB in the Super Bowl in Alexander? Everyone is talking about Bettis but no one is saying anything about Alexander. If Stevens doesn't say anything, some people might have thought Pittsburgh was playing against themselves in the Super Bowl. People are overlooking the defense of the Seahawks. Though you probably can't tell me more than one person on the defense of the Seahawks, they are a tough defense to go against. If the Super Bowl came down to playmakers, which team has more? Which team has more offensive playmakers? Defensive? Special teams? First commercial of the Super Bowl: Pepsi, Chevy, Bud, Coors? It's amazing to think that some people tune into the Super Bowl more for the commercials than the game. Sad but true. Can the Super Bowl live up to the hype of the Rose Bowl? Well folks, enjoy the Super Bowl this weekend. Whether you are watching it a home or at a party or at a sports book, enjoy the spectical we call the Super Bowl. Just The Facts: Congrads to our two Super Bagel Winners. Each won a $55 bet on the big game. This week we start giving out future college basketball winners. Tune in Saturday at 8 am on the BUZZ, 1270 am in Northern Nevada. Thehooks Radio Show, the only handicapping show that talks with the listeners, not at them.
