Week 16 Previews
Kansas City -6 @ Oakland
The Chiefs travel to Oakland this week to take on the Raiders and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Is there a team out there that is worse than the Raiders? Let’s rephrase that: Is there a team whose offense is worse than the Raiders? The defense of the Raiders is doing its best and doing a halfway decent job this year. Their offense on the other hand is miserable. They haven’t scored more than 20 points since Oct 29th (shutout twice). The Rams shut them out last week. The same Rams team who had given up 42 points to Chicago and 34 to the Cards the last few weeks. The Chiefs have a rushing game that the Raiders will have to stop or this game will get ugly. The Raiders kept the first game close losing by 4. But since then they have lost 3 of 4 ATS. The Raiders offense will have to score more than 10 to keep this game close. Just don’t see it happening. With Brooks upset and Moss possibly not playing, where will they find offense? They won’t.
Take the Chiefs.
New Orleans +3 @ NY Giants
The Saints travel up north to play a Giants team trying to keep up in the wild NFC wild card race.
The Saints are coming off a loss in which nobody played well on either side of the ball. Brees didn’t look anything like he had the last few weeks and Bush was held in check. But in all that mess, they were still able to wrap up a division title. The Giants on the other hand, are still in the playoff hunt and they know that any little slip up could cost them a playoff spot. The question here is who wants it more? If the Saints played well last week, the Giants might be the play. But with the Saints struggling, they will look to play better. To the Saints, they are playing for the #2 playoff spot. Any loss could send them to the third or possibly the 4th spot. Can the Giants stop Brees? Can they stop Bush? Can they stop Duece? With a banged up defense and the possibility of Strahan being out again, the Giants will struggle to stop all three of the Saints stars.
Take the Saints as they rebound off last week’s loss.
Chicago -4.5 @ Detroit
The Bears travel to Detroit to take on a Lions team that is lost beyond belief.
The Lions are out of control. They may actually be the worst team in football. The Raiders at least have a defense that is respectable. The Lions are out of sync on offense, defense, and even in the coaching staff. When your non-mobile QB leads your team in rushing last week, you know you are in trouble. That was against a Packers team that has a very spotty defense. This week they go against one of the best defenses in the league. Yeah, they may be resting a few people since they have clinched home field advantage, but their second string is still better than the Lion’s first team. The Lions will struggle stopping the run which will give Grossman or Griese a chance to throw the ball around the field when it’s time to throw. The Lions will struggle once again.
Take the Bears. This line would be higher if the Bears didn’t go to OT last week with T.B. Won’t matter.
2006 Hawaii Bowl
Hawaii -6.5
Hawaii Over 73.5
Hawaii will be gunning for their first 11 win season since 1992. They have the best QB in the nation, the home field advantage, the more stable coaching situation, and motivation from their last loss to Oregon State at home to end the season.
The Sun Devils went 1-5 against bowl teams with the lone victory coming over Nevada early in the year when Nevada was trying to get over the huge opening loss to Fresno State. They will be forced to play catch up and will not be able to stay with the high flying offensive attack of Hawaii because:
The difference in this game will be Hawaii's All-WAC defensive linemen Melila Purcell and Ikaika Alama-Francis. They will be able to rush Carpenter into mistakes that will doom Arizona State. DC Glanville will be able to generate consistent pressure and the defense of Hawaii will win this game.
This game will be won by Hawaii and since it is a bowl game expect the offense of Hawaii to keep the pedal down. Hawaii will score over 60 points and win by more than 2 touchdowns.
2006 Las Vegas Bowl
Oregon vs BYU -3
BYU is the second team from the Mountain West to play this bowl season. The first one was TCU which started our bowl season off with a win at Thehooks. The Mountain West was the most over looked conference this past year. BYU is for real and is a total complete team. The Cougars have been out of the spot light for quite sometime but will make a huge impression Thursday night against the Oregon Ducks.
You think of BYU and automatically offense comes to mind. Well this version has the offense but also has one of the best defenses in the West. The linebacker core is fast and will be the difference Thursday night. BYU will get their points and John Beck will have another great game but it will be the ability of BYU to slow down the running game of the Ducks that will enable BYU to win this game.
We have waited for the line to drop, which it has, 5 to 3 points. The line might end up at 1 or 2 because everyone will bet with the bigger conference. It does not matter which conference these teams come from, the better team comes from Utah. Lay the 3 points. If you wait you should be able to lay under the field goal.
Philadelphia @ Dallas -6.5
It's the Cowboys and Eagles for all the marbles in the NFC East in Dallas on Christmas Day. Wow, a reason to watch football on Christmas day. Forget the NBA crap, this is good stuff.
Everyone is talking about Romo and the high flying offense of the Cowboys but the game will be won by the ability of the Cowboys to harass Jeff Garcia into mistakes and the inability of the Eagles WR's to make plays. Dallas has it all in their grasp and they might be looking at a chance to regain the #2 seed if New Orleans falls prior to this NFC East Clash.
We expect Owens to make a difference this week and the Cowboys to step up to clinch the NFC East. The Cowboys will be able to run enough to set up the big plays. This won't be easy but by the end of the 3rd quarter the Cowboys will have this game in hand.
2006 Motor City Bowl
Central Michigan -8
If you have not seen the freshman QB of Central Michigan Dan LeFevour this season, then now you have a reason to watch this game. All he did was run for six touchdowns and 452 yards. Pretty good huh? Well he also threw for 25 touchdowns and only ten interceptions. Central Michigan runs the spread offense and Dan is the Man and uses all his weapons.
We know Central Michigan lost their Head Coach, he has taken over at Cincinnati, but the offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn is still there and this might be his audition for the job. He will look to impress the university.
Middle Tenn. depends on their running game in order to move the ball through the air. Central Michigan has a solid front 7 and will be able to stop the running game of the Blue Raiders.
Lay the points with Central Michigan and be sure to watch the Frosh QB have a field day and for Coach Jeff Quinn earn the Head Coach Job.
Baltimore +3.5 @ Pittsburgh
The Ravens travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers trying to keep their home field advantage hopes alive.
The last time these two teams met, the Ravens put a hurting on Big Ben and the Steelers. Big Ben was dumped on the ground 9 times and said that was the hardest he had ever been hit. Since then though, the Steelers have won 3 straight. Can they continue their hot streak against the Ravens? This is a tough one to call. The Ravens are still in the hunt for home field advantage in the AFC. A loss would pretty much give the Chargers home field advantage. The Ravens have the tie breaker and need to keep winning and hope for a Charger’s loss. Pittsburgh would love nothing more than to end the Ravens’ chance of getting home field. Who wants it more? It will be a close game no matter what and the team with more on the line will want it more.
The Ravens are the play here. More on the line for the Ravens will mean they will want it more.
