College Football Pick: Iowa again will have a tough defense and might have the best set of LB’s in the Big Ten. Even though the line loses Gallery, they should be more than okay. Ferentz is a former OL coach in the NFL and he will mold this unit to at least perform as well as last year. Kent State will be without their Sr. QB Cribbs because of legal issues. The defense has to be better than last year but this is not the most important game on their schedule. Bad spot for the Golden Flashes. They want to stay healthy and beat up on Liberty next week and then get ready for the season. Trends: Under Coach Ferentz the Hawkeyes are 18-3-1 ATS at home for an amazing 86% in the past 22 games. Iowa is 7-2 against the MAC since 1998. Kent State has been outscored on the average 40-9 but as gone 2-2 ATS versus the Big 10. Take Iowa to get off to the good start while Kent State looks forward to next week.
Iowa's defense completely dominated the overmatched Golden Flashes holding them to 110 yards on offense and -13 on the ground. The only Kent State score came on a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown or else this would have been a shut-out. The LB crew from Iowa will cause havoc to opponents all year.
College Football Pick:
On paper, their stats are very identical from last year. Both averaged about 30 points a game. Their rushing defenses were tops in the nation with New Mexico ranked 5th and Washington St. 6th. They played last year at Washington St. with the Cougars winning straight up 23-13 but not covering the 14.5 point spread. Now with all this, this game should be a toss up...but look at some trends.
The Cougars are 8-2 in their last 10 games in September. That includes a one point ATS loss last year to Idaho. Another strong trend for the Cougars is when the line is between -3 and +3, they are 6-2 in their last 8 games. With the Cougars, you are looking at 80% and 75% trends respectively. On the flip side, the Lobos are 11-22 or 33% in their non conference games since the early 90's. To go along with the trend, the Pac-10 has owned Lobos in the past years.
With all this in mind, the game should go in Washington St.'s favor!
Okay we had the football gods on our side during this game. New Mexico should have won this game. But there will be game that we lose this year that should never lose so we will take our money and run on this one. Washington State showed why it has so many wins over the last few years coming up with timely defense and the key punt block to turn the momentum. Josh Swogger looked good after the game settle down. He will have to be great if this team can't run the ball.
College Football Pick: SMU has 14 returning starters back but they went 0-12, so is this a good thing or a bad thing? We do not see them losing every game but this is not the place to be thinking that +24.5 points is a good bet. Texas Tech loses their starting QB but didn’t they just go through that last year and looked what happened. This offense is a QB’s dream come true. It is the system and the system will roll and make sure they are hitting on all cylinders.
Trends:
SMU has lost 9 SU to Texas Tech by an average of 28 points.
Well the system still racked up the stats but the points were lacking in the system. Texas Tech will eventually start to score points and from this game you can take it to the bank that they will try to score no matter what the scoreboard reads. Stash that in your pocket for later on this season when the points start rolling.
College Football Pick: Colorado State has only 10 returning starters and the expectations are low in Fort Collins. Colorado has the chance to blow this team out. Colorado has 13 returning starters and a quality QB in Klatt and things would be looking up for this program. BUT, the off field rumors/problems will haunt this team. Look for the Rams to win straight up and not only because of the Buffaloes off the field problems but because Coach Lubick is a great coach and always has his team ready to play. Trends say to take the Rams, they are 6-2 ATS in Boulder and the Dog is 7-1 the past 8 years.
QB Justin Holland and WR David Anderson are going to raise hell on opponents all year. Holland is the real deal. Rams should have won this game outright and if these teams played again in 5 weeks they would be favored by a touchdown.
College Football Pick: These teams tend to have shootouts when they meet. Look for Nevada to put the air back into the Pack attack under Coach Ault and Moates should run for 200 plus yards behind a veteran offensive line against a DL that lost 2 good players to the NFL. LA Tech has 8 players returning on defense but last year they gave up over 32 points a game and have brought in a new Defensive Coordinator. It will take some time for the DC to make a difference. The average combined score is 88.5 points when these teams meet. LA Tech will score by the ground and the Pack will score through the air. Take the over.
Moates is the man in Ruston, Louisiana. We predicted the 200 yards rushing but where is the air attack for the Wolf Pack. Rowe had pressure all-day and held onto the ball too much. It will be interesting to see who is under the center next week for Nevada. Game was the lowest scoring game these two teams have played and still managed to go over.
College Football Pick: North Carolina @ Virginia –21.5 If this was basketball, it would be take North Carolina and the points but this is football and the tables are turned. Virginia took out Temple last week rather handily by 30 while North Carolina took on William and Mary and won by double digits as well. Both teams didn’t take on the toughest opponents in the world, but Virginia looked pretty tough. Last year, these two teams met in Tar Heel country with Virginia winning easily 38-13. This year the game is back in Virginia where the Cavaliers were 5-1 ATS last year covering against teams such as Florida State and Virginia Tech. North Carolina wasn’t too bad on the road last year covering 4 of 6 games ATS but not winning one straight up. Since 93’ these teams have met in Virginia a total of 6 times with Virginia coming ahead all 6 times both straight up and ATS. Virginia looks very tough this year and they have to be with the addition of Miami and Virginia Tech to the ACC. They cannot overlook teams such as North Carolina or the year won’t be a good one. Look for the Cavs to come out tough in their home opener and show the ACC they are a team to look out for. Virginia takes it to North Carolina this week!
For the second straight week, Virginia scored on their first 5 possessions. This week against N.C. they scored on their first 7 possessions. Virginia also rushed for 300 yards. This was an easy cover for the Cavaliers.
College Football Pick: Auburn –12.5 @ Miss. St. Tuberville likes to pound this team. There is no mercy when these two teams meet. Last trip Auburn used a fake field goal when leading 35-14 in the 4th quarter. Auburn has covered the last two years and should easily handle this team this year. Look for Williams to run for over 150 yards and the line of Auburn, which should be very good, to control the game. The new offense will begin to click and this will be a dangerous team that is kind of flying low in the public. Look for Mississippi St to be brought down to earth. They were really fired up last week when they beat up on Tulane. It was a big deal for Coach Croom to get that first win because he would still be looking for it if he did not get it last week. Time to see how good Mississippi St is against the SEC. Auburn to cover and possibly keep this team under 10 points.
They just pounded this team with both their running backs going over 100 yards. Welcome to SEC football. Game played out like we expected.
College Football Pick: W. Michigan @ VA TECH -24 You open up against USC and play fairly well for 3 quarters. Everyone seems to think there was something wrong with USC. Hell no there is nothing wrong with them. The problem is that VA Tech is better then what people think. Do not count out Coach Beamers team and his understanding that they need to win now. The schedule is there for them to get to 3-1 before taking on West Virginia and then the tough ACC. He will have his team ready to rebound. Trend wise VA Tech is 5-2 ATS in home openers since 1997. They had the backing of the crowd in Landover but there is nothing like home cookin and the Hokies will get on the winning path by blowing out this team. Western Michigan only returns 11 starters this year and only rushed for 2.8 yards per carry against UT Martin. They will struggle mightily against the hungry Hokies and a fired up crowd.
This was the easiest play of the day. They now have shut this team out 3 times. VA Tech will win 7-9 games and get to a bowl game.
College Football Pick: Southern Mississippi @ Nebraska –14.5 Nebraska proved last week that they can run this West Coast Offense as they beat up on Western Illinois. Southern Mississippi comes to Memorial Stadium this week looking to knock around the Huskers and show them how to stop the West Coast offense. Unfortunately, the Huskers don’t treat visitors too kindly when they come to town. Since 92’ the Huskers are winning 64% ATS as a home favorite including 80% last year. Nebraska is also a team that likes to cause turnovers and turn them into points. This doesn’t bowed well for Southern Miss. They don’t do well against teams that have strong rushing defenses and cause turnovers. Nebraska does both and that’s a big scare for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss is 0-6 ATS against teams that cause TO at more than a +1 average. But wait there is more. Against good rushing defensive teams the Golden Eagles are a miserable 27% ATS. All in all, the trends don’t look good for Southern Miss. This is their first game of the year so the first game jitters may still be learking for the Golden Eagles. Coming to Memorial Stadium with the jitters isn’t a good thing and the Huskers will take care of those jitters real easily. Look for Nebraska to run the West Coast offense well again this week and shut down the Golden Eagles!
Turnovers, Turnovers, Turnovers! Nebraska out gained S. Miss by 250 yards but turned over the ball 5 times, it is hard to win no matter no matter how much you out gain a team. Yards don’t equal points!
College Football Pick: Duke @ Connecticut -14 UConn is out to prove they are more than just a basketball school this year. Of course, both their basketball programs are top notch and proven winners, their football program is making many strides including a 9 win season last year. They are no longer an Independent as they have moved to the Big East and look to dominate the conference. Now if a team like UConn wants to become a proven program they can’t look over teams such as Duke. Now if this were basketball, UConn vs. Duke would be huge. But in football, Duke just doesn’t have the same program strength as their basketball program. But teams such as Duke can be over looked and BOOM, there goes your season. UConn cannot let this happen and won’t. Their program has come to far in the last two years to let a team like Duke take them out. UConn has taken care of teams with poor defenses with ease lately. In their last 9 games against bad defenses, they are a smooth 7-2 ATS. The streak should get it’s 8th victory ATS with a victory over Duke. If UConn wants to improve its football program a big win is in order against Duke. Take UConn is this game!
Coach signs a new contract the day before the game, you would think UCONN would come out and blow away a team that’s won 6 games in 4 years! UCONN needed 16 points in the final quarter to pull out a straight out victory but ATS loss.
College Football Pick: Duke @ VA TECH Look for VA Tech to put another lopsided victory in their pocket. The Hokies still need to roll this week before the competition becomes tougher. Hokies will run at will on offense and their defense should come close to pitching a shut out against a very suspect Duke offense. Duke has not shown the ability to do anything on offense and they have not played a defense that is half as good as the Hokies. Do not be surprised if VA Tech’s defense out scores the Blue Devils’ offense. Randall should have a huge game on the ground and in the air. Special Note: This is Duke’s 3rd game in a row on the road. They will be looking ahead to actually play a game at home instead of the thumping going on in Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech dominated this game and if you take away the very start and the very end they win 41-3. Spotted Duke 7 in the first quarter and then with 1:44 left, Duke hits a 35 yard touchdown pass on 4th and 11. Duke only had 8 first downs but when you’re getting 26 points, sometimes it only takes a few breaks to cover. This one hurt.
College Football Pick: Clemson @. Texas A&M This will be a tough game for both teams. Clemson is coming off a heart breaking loss to Georgia Tech and Texas A&M is coming off a victory over Wyoming. One might think the momentum is in the Aggies favor but they beat Wyoming! Wyoming isn’t a team to get too excited about beating especially after Utah thumped A&M a week earlier. A&M’s running back in questionable for the game so that is another down fall for the Aggies especially if he can’t go. Clemson is pissed and wants to show everyone they are still a top team. They are heading to A&M where it is a tough place to play but the Tigers should prevail in this one. They are pissed, looking to beat up somebody and unfortunately for the Aggies, it is going to be them.
We thought Clemson would bounce back, and they will, but not for at least two more weeks. They got destroyed and now they must go on the road for two rough games against Florida State and Virginia. This team might be done for the year.
College Football Pick: Georgia Tech @ North Carolina Georgia Tech made an unbelievable comeback last week against Clemson with a thrilling victory in the last few minutes. North Carolina was bum rushed by Virginia 56-24. N.C. let Virginia rush for 299 yards. If G.T does that to them, N.C is in for another long game. N.C. is at home, which one would think is a good thing; not for the Tar Heels. In the last 3 years, they are a dismal 4-14 at home ATS. That is a smooth 22%. Georgia Tech comes to town with a talented defense, which is another downward spiral for the Tar Heels. Against good defenses, they are 35% ATS. This game isn’t looking good for the Tar Heels. And one more trend to throw your way is in the first half of the season, Georgia Tech is 65% ATS since 1992. Home Field Advantage? Not in Tar Heel land, take Georgia Tech in this one.
Georgia Tech was a Ramlin Mess. Turnovers and penalties killed this team. They made North Carolina look good on Defense. There is no excuse; Reggie Ball should have destroyed this team by himself. Sad and inexcusable effort by Georgia Tech.
College Football Pick: Oregon @ Oklahoma The Ducks should have gotten their first win last week because they are going to get crushed in this game. Oklahoma is just too solid in every category for this game to be close. They got their wake up call in week 1 and responded last week looking like the team we thought they would be. If the Ducks turn the ball over 7 times again, the final score could be 73-0. Last year a PAC Ten team, UCLA, came to Norman and the Sooners beat them 59-24. Look for the turnovers to only be around 3 and the Sooners to win by 5 to 6 touchdowns.
Oklahoma did not come and explode like we thought they would. We could say that they should have covered but in reality the Ducks should have had at least 9 more points on the board. Oregon played very respectfully and you have to tip your hat to them. Peterson looks like the next Heisman trophy candidate for the Sooners. Kid can flat out run the rock.
College Football Pick: Minnesota @ Colorado St. Both these teams have been involved in thumpings the last two weeks. Minnesota has done the thumping and last week USC did a major thumping on the Rams 49-0. Minnesota travels to Colorado St. where the Rams look to turn the season around after starting 0-2. Unfortunately for the Rams, Minnesota is hot and putting up lots and lots of points. Minnesota was 7th in the nation last year in points and they are looking to better that stat. This is another home field advantage question, like in the N.C/G.T game. Is there a home field advantage for the Rams? Sure there is, the whole mile high altitude change but Minnesota likes playing on the road especially as a favorite. Minnesota is a perfect 5-0 over the last 3 years ATS as a road favorite. The spread is small because Colorado St is no slouch at home but look for Minnesota to keep it perfect ATS and put up a big W against the Rams.
Minnesota saved us from the goose egg. Long wait for a guaranteed win. The Gophers can run the ball and Cupito looks good behind center. Hope he recovers from the concussion with no side affects or teams might be able to load up on the run. With no Ohio State or Purdue on the schedule, this is your dark horse in the Big Ten.
College Football Pick: NC State +9.5 @ Virginia Tech NC State held Ohio State to 137 total yards and only 64 of that was on the ground. They shot themselves in the foot and will be out to redeem themselves in this very tough contest. This should be a nail biter with the outcome coming down to the last possession. We are getting more than enough points to cover and think NC State might just win outright. Hokies are good but laying 9.5 points is way too much. NC State is 9-0 as an away dog under Coach Amato and they have a chip on their shoulder from last week. Take the points and enjoy what should be a great game to watch.
NC State is for real just because of their defense. If they stop turning the ball over they might run the table. I am serious about that statement, they can be that good. We said that this would come down to the last possession and it did. Great to watch when you have 9.5 in your pocket
College Football Pick: Purdue –21 @ Illinois We had Purdue charted this summer as an OVER team to bet. Did not jump in the total bandwagon, which is good because this defense is much better than we expected. We knew the offense would be good but this defense has surprised us. They will destroy Illinois and if the defense is not as good as it has been, it’s okay because this offense will score 56 this weekend.
Just when you compliment the defense they come out and lay an egg. We thought that might happen but we really thought they would hang 56 on this team. Might have to reconsider the OVER plays for Purdue. Easy over but a bad cover today by Purdue.
San Jose State has found their QB and just in time to take on a team they can beat. SMU has not looked good at all the past two weeks against very good competition. They are banged up and will regret the beating they have taken because it will take its toll this week as the Spartans will win this game outright. San Jose State is 3-1 SU and ATS against SMU.
You have to be thinking the football gods must have blessed the Mustangs. They have laid an egg all year, then come out and make a big statement breaking the second longest losing streak in the nation. I guess we should bet the farm on Army next week.
Northwestern @ Minnesota -15 College Football Pick: Minnesota will run all day on Northwestern because they are that good and the Wildcats have injury problems on their defensive front 7. QB Cupito will be ready to go, which will only help stretch the Wildcat defense out and increase the running holes for the Gophers. Northwestern will stay around for a while but the Gophers will wear them down in the second half.
Are the Gophers for real? Only time will tell but they are on a nice run right now. This team can run and pass the ball with the best of them. If the defense can keep playing like this they can be a huge factor in the Big Ten race.
College Football Pick: Louisville – 8 @ North Carolina The Cardinals are the real deal and will score over 45 points against the weak Tar Heel defense. This game is set up perfect with the Tar Heels on Cloud 9 after their great performance against Georgia Tech. They will not know what hit them until the 4th quarter arrives with Louisville up by 28. Tar Heels will score but not enough against the high powered Cardinals.
Thought the Tar Heels would be flat but I think this was more of the Cardinals being dominant. Forget Boise St, Utah, and Fresno State, this is your BCS Buster team. The Cardinals are a complete team with veteran leadership. They could run the table and yes I know that they must travel to Miami. They could surprise the Hurricanes in Miami. They probably will be getting 14 plus points. Could be on of our top 5 plays that week.
College Football Pick: LSU +3 @ Georgia This should be a barnburner. If you like offense and to see the scoreboard light up, turn the channel, because defenses will rule this game. This game will come down to the last possession and with 3 points you have to feel good about watching this game and enjoying the fact that you have the field goal in your back pocket. Both teams have played to the level of its competition and I am sure that they both will this week too. Most people will give Georgia the advantage because of their QB Green. We give LSU the advantage because of their defense and Coach Saban.
Not even close. The offense is worse than we thought and Georgia is much better than we were giving them credit for. LSU will be in trouble against the upper teams unless they find an offense.
College Football Pick: Michigan -18 @ Indiana Time to start separating the men from the boys and the Wolverines will rock this team. Indiana looks like they have played decent football but their opponents have basically given them so many chances with penalties and turnovers. Michigan will run the football, yes I said run the football, and pass when needed while Indiana will struggle to move the ball. Wolverines by at least 21 points.
Trend continues with the Wolverines owning this team. Next week they get the Gophers in the Big House. Should be a great matchup.
Kansas @ Nebraska –12.5 College Football Pick: Nebraska has covered the past 4 years against Kansas and should continue their success this week. The offense is coming along while the defense is very good. If the offense can limit the turnovers this game will be out of reach by halftime. Kansas is hurting from last week and playing the Huskers is not going to make the pain go away.
The Huskers are killing us. Every time we think they are ready to get rolling they lay an egg. We may have to stay off this team for the rest of the season.
College Football Pick: Iowa State @ Oklahoma State –17.5 Just finish the game and this will not be close. Oklahoma State is kind of flying under the radar but they can play defense and run the football with the best of them. Iowa State has beaten No Iowa and No Illinois but lost to Iowa. Time to be drilled by the dark horse to win the very tough Big 12 South.
The sleeper in this tough division keeps rolling. Remember that this team has beaten the Sooners and will not be intimidated when they play them. Great running team with a good defense.
College Football Pick: Bowling Green –6.5 @ Temple Coming off a loss with time to regroup, you have to like this team to beat up on Temple. Temple has given up over 40 points to the real teams that have played, all losses by more than 23 points and have average just under 18 points. The only game they have looked good in is their 38-7 victory against Florida A&M. Bowling Green needs to play like they did against Oklahoma and get things rolling for their run in the conference.
Completely destroyed Temple. This should have been our first 5 hook for this college season. Temple is a very bad team and you knew that Bowling Green would bounce back.
College Football Pick:
CALIFORNIA @ USC -7
The interception in the endzone killed our chances for the cover. Thought that the difference would be Bush and the defense. Bush helped but not enough and the defense could not stop Rodgers until the end. The difference in the game was the special teams play of USC while the difference of covering or not was the INT in the endzone.
College Football Pick: NEVADA @ HAWAII -18 The home team has dominated this series and Nevada looked horrible against a below average UNLV team last week. Look for the Rainbows to blow out Nevada early, then pour it on as the game goes into the second half. Nevada is starting to rotate their QB’s but neither of them seems to be the answer while Hawaii has Timmy Chang on the verge of breaking the NCAA career passing yards. Nevada will not be able to stop the aerial attack of the Rainbows.
UNR stayed around longer than we thought and actually had a back door cover until the 2nd string QB got his chance at the weak defense of Nevada. Hawaii could not stop the run and in effect the game was closer than it should have been.
College Football Pick: SAN DIEGO STATE -3.5 @ WYOMING The Aztecs have some injury problems but they have proven to be tough on the road. They have played hard for Tom Craft against some very tough teams. Their defense will dominate this game and they are not far from being very good. Trend note: San Diego State is 11-2 ATS in their conference openers since 1991 and is 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in their 3rd straight away game since 1992.
The Aztecs season might be in jeopardy, which is too bad because they looked so good against Michigan. Playing Michigan and UCLA has taken its toll on this team and the injuries were too much for them to overcome against a team that they have dominated lately.
College Football Pick: OKLAHOMA STATE -6.5 @ COLORADO The Cowboys look to keep running under the radar this week in Boulder. The Buffaloes have been better than we thought they would be but the teams that they have beaten are not what we thought they would be either. Time for some real competition started last week against Missouri and now they get the Cowboys. Oklahoma needs to win this game to stay on track for a special season. Bobby Purify, the starting RB for Colorado, is questionable with a shoulder injury, which only leads us more to play on Oklahoma State.
They just keep running over people. When is Morency going to start getting some ink for the Heisman? The running game is starting to really open up the passing game for the Cowboys.
HOUSTON @ SO MISSISSIPPI -17.5 Houston has one win this season and that was against Army and looked halfway decent against Miami but both of those games were at home. On the road this team has not looked good at all, losing to Rice, Oklahoma and Memphis. Southern Miss just won two games on the road against quality teams and everyone knows that they upset Nebraska in their only home game of the year. Thursday night under lights will only pump this team up more. This is a solid football team that will not beat it self, which is what Houston would need to stay close.
How the heck does Houston stay in this game? The Golden Eagles should have finished this game in the first half. They are lucky to get the win while we are out of luck because they forgot to finish Houston off when they had the chance.
Boston College -10 @ Pittsburgh Boston College will look to revenge their loss to the Panthers from last year. Pittsburgh is not a very good team while Boston College is a solid team with two weeks of preparation to get ready for the pay back.
College Football Pick: Boston College just played themselves out of a bowl game. 12 penalties and 2 turnovers did not help the cause but the biggest factor is that they could not run on Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh has played to level of their opponent and this week it cost us that Boston College did not play well.
College Football Pick: California/UCLA OVER 57 Coach Tedford is not going to dink and dunk the ball this week. Look for the Bears to air it out and the Bruins to try to keep pace. Points should be flying all over the place as this old fashion PAC Ten shoot out takes place in Berkeley.
Game went as planned with the exception that the Bruins moved the ball through the air instead of the ground. Both Defenses struggled to stop the opponent’s offense. It was nice to see Rodgers throw the ball down field this week, he should have tried that more last week. UCLA has enough offense to scare the big boys but not enough defense to make a difference.
College Football Pick: Boise State -21 @ Tulsa The Broncos have had two weeks to get ready for this road trip. They know how important every game is and will not over look Tulsa. Tulsa has also had two weeks to get ready but this team is not the team of last year. They need talent and they do not have it. Every decent team has blown out Tulsa this year and Boise State is much more than a decent team. Look for the Broncos to get it into high gear and blow Tulsa out.
The Broncos were lucky to win this game and not even close enough on the intensity to cover 3 touchdowns. Tulsa has sucked all year and the week we go against them they come up with one of their better games. Do not look into this too much. Boise clearly did not come ready to play and hurt their cause with 2 interceptions and a 100-yard kick off return.
College Football Pick: Michigan/Illinois OVER 53.5 The last 5 years this game has resulted in at least 54 points per game with the average combined score at 65.6 points per contest. Michigan will do whatever it wants against this defense while Illinois will throw the ball with some success against the Wolverines.
Put the ball in the end zone. Too many missed opportunities by both teams. If Illinois could have put more pressure on in the second half perhaps Michigan would not have run the ball the entire second half. Illinois should have been able to throw on the suspect Wolverine secondary more than they did.
College Football Pick: South Carolina –11 @ Kentucky Coach Holtz will not let this team come out flat again. This defense is too good not to show up and shut Kentucky out this weekend. South Carolina has dominated Kentucky in Lexington covering the spread the past 7 trips there. The Gamecocks will rebound and with a strong defensive effort and score at least 28 points.
This was a perfect spot for a bounce back game for South Carolina. Instead their inept offense almost cost them the game. Come on Holtz, get this thing into gear and put some points on the board. Your defense deserves better and your backers do too.
College Football Pick: Iowa +2.5 @ Penn St. Look for Iowa to win a close, hard fought game against Penn State. They have turned their season around with two impressive wins the past two games at home and now will take to the road and continue their success against a team they have dominated lately. Hawkeyes are 5-1 ATS against Penn State since 1996 and has outrushed Penn State 175-45 ypg the past 3 years.
16 total first downs, 2 missed field goals, and 2 safeties sums up this tough fought defensive struggle. If they played next week the total would start at 16. Penn State shot themselves in the foot over and over again while Iowa seemed to play not to lose instead of to win. Good cover for us but the game should have ended 8-6 Penn State. We will take the win because we end up getting screwed later on in the day.
College Football Pick: TCU/Houston Over 66.5 117 points scored last year and we might top that this year. Houston’s offense is starting to click and the TCU defense is not what it used to be. Texas Tech starting clicking against TCU and put up 70 earlier this year. Houston has had a couple of extra days to get ready and ready they will be. Look for an explosive, high octane offensive game this weekend.
Why the heck did Houston wait until the 4th quarter to wake up? Only 33 points in the first 3 quarters then 28 in the 4th quarter, but we needed 35 to get the over. This game was a dead over that took to long for one team to wake up. Told you we got screwed later in the day, wait, we get the short stick again with Georgia.
College Football Pick: Bowling Green -12.5 @ Ohio The offense is in high gear now and the Falcons appear headed for a showdown with Toledo. Bowling Green is 9-3 SU and 10-2 ATS the past 12 meetings against Ohio U. Bowling Green hung 72 on them the last time they played; can we get a repeat performance? Ohio lost its soul against Marshall when it lost a game they should have won. This is a case of two teams going in opposite directions, so take the highflying Falcons from Bowling Green.
They continued to dominate this team as they easily covered the 12 or if you got it late, the 14 point spread. Bowling Green did whatever it wanted to do on offense and kept Ohio out of the endzone until the 4th quarter. The Falcons are hitting on all cylinders on offense and now with the defense playing so well, they are a scary team to play.
College Football Pick: Georgia -8 @ Arkansas Georgia is 2-0 the last two times they have gone to Fayetteville outscoring Arkansas 65-10. More recently Georgia bounced back from their tough loss to Tennessee while the Razorbacks now have a gimpy QB and will find the rushing yards hard to come by against one of the best run defenses in the nation. Georgia is a great road team and should cover the 8 points this weekend.
Georgia should have won this game by at least 14 points. Turnovers, penalties, and missed field goals killed us. Georgia had over 500 yards of offense, had the ball for 38 minutes and only 20 points to show for it. This game hurt us bad. We had a chance to go 5-0 today and Georgia and Houston let us down.
College Football Pick: Oklahoma State +3.5 @ Missouri The Cowboys come in licking their wounds from the beating Texas A&M gave them while Missouri has to feel confident in their performance against Texas. Expect a fast game with the clock running with both teams running the ball up and down the field. If Oklahoma State holds onto the football they should win this game. Three out of the last 4 games between these two teams has needed overtime and with +3.5 in your pocket you have to like your chances with the Cowboys. Look for Oklahoma State to win straight out and get back on course for a run at the title.
Nothing like spotting a team 17 points and then staying with your game plan if your plan was to throw, but they planned to run the ball and run the ball they did. What a great job of not panicking and sticking to your guns. Morency again resurfaces as a Heisman contender. If they can repeat this performance next week against Oklahoma then he would become the Heisman leader
College Football Pick: Virginia Tech -5 @ Geogia Tech VA TECH is 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS on Thursday, all as a favorite. The Hokies defense will throttle the anemic Yellow Jacket offense while their offense and special teams will do enough to cover the 5 points. Coach Beamer has had two weeks to get his team ready for the stretch run and they need every victory to try to get to the biggest bowl payout possible.
The Hokies exploded for 25 points in the 4th quarter to come from behind and also get the cover. Bryan Randall played a superb game and the defense shut down Georgia Tech when they needed to. Virginia Tech has a chance at 10 wins this year, which should set them up for a nice bowl game.
College Football Pick: Arizona State/ California OVER 60 Get ready to see over 1,000 yards of offense as these two talented offenses take the field. Arizona State has a very poor secondary which Rodgers will exploit while Walters will be good for at least 3 long touchdown passes. Both teams will be up and down the field via large chunks. There will be no dinking and dunking the ball in this game. We could witness 6 to 8 touchdowns coming from 30+ yards out. The past two years these teams have combined for an average of 83.5 points when they have played.
Walters has now laid an egg in the two biggest games of the year. First USC shuts him down then the Bears do the same. What should have been a very exciting game became a game of kill the clock because Arizona State could not muster any offense.
College Football Pick: Penn State @ Ohio State -6 Ohio State is 5-0 SU and ATS when hosting Penn State. Penn State will probably be without their QB Mills and have averaged only 6.8 points against the real teams on their schedule. The Buckeyes are not about to look past anyone after their 3 game losing skid. They actually scored points last week and will score enough this week to get the cover.
Special teams touchdown and a defensive touchdown helped this game from being an Iowa/Penn State score. No offensive spark from either team. The Buckeyes played close to the vest on offense because they got the lead and knew the Lions cannot score.
College Football Pick: Texas A&M –22 @ Baylor As bad as Texas A&M was last year they still blasted Baylor 73-10. This year they look to be one of the better teams in the conference and will not look past Baylor after their tough game last week. Look for the Aggies to continue their dominance (9-2 ATS) against the Bears.
We thought the wake up call came last week for the Aggies when they almost lost to Colorado. This has to be the worst lost of the year for any college football team. Failure to cover would have been bad enough but to lose outright with a chance to do something special this season is totally inexcusable. What the hell is going on?
College Football Pick: San Jose State/UTEP OVER 62.5 UTEP is ranked in the top 25 BCS standings, yes that is right and it was not a typo. Coach Price has this team poised to go to a Bowl. This has to be one of the biggest stories in college football. The last two weeks the score of the Miners games has been UTEP 44 – Opposition 27. Look for the same as San Jose can score and keep this interesting or at least a back door cover on the OVER.
Failure to score hardly any points in the middle quarters killed our over in this game. If this game were played next week, we would still take the over because this was a fluke. The points should have been well over the total. This game hurt because of the eggs Texas A&M and California laid in their game.
College Football Pick: Arizona +1 @ Washington Arizona has covered the spread the past four years and beat Washington Su last year in Seattle. The Wildcats are playing better football right now compared to the Huskies and with the better coach strolling the sidelines you have to like the Wildcats to take care of business this weekend.
Washington self-destructed with 4 turnovers in the second half as their season continues to go south. Arizona would have covered by more but had two touchdowns called back on penalties. This was an easy pick with one coach going out and the players having nothing to play for versus another coach trying to build for next year, conversely the players are playing for something.
College Football Pick: San Jose State/Nevada Over 65 The scoreboard will be working overtime this weekend in Reno when these two teams collide at Mackay stadium. The average combined score has been 84 points the past four years. Nevada has been able to run the ball this year which is bad news for San Jose because they cannot stop the run. The Pack will run and get up early while the Spartans will find plenty of holes in the Nevada defense to keep the scoreboard running well into the 70 point range.
52 points scored in the second half saves this pick for us. Both offenses could not run the ball in the first half which was a total surprise considering how weak both defenses are against the run. Nevada started to move the ball on the ground and San Jose State was able to make enough big plays to get the total to go over.
Fresno State -7 @ Rice The Bulldogs snapped out of their slump with an impressive win last week. This is a very good team that went into the toilet as soon as they lost their first game. They wanted it all and as soon as the bubble was broken they went south. Now that they are back to the right frame of mind look for them to crush a weak Rice team this weekend.
This was an easy pick once we figured that the Bulldogs have finally gotten over the fact that they were not the BCS buster. You have to remember that this team beat Kansas State on the road so to only lay 7.5 points to a weak Rice team was taking candy from a baby. The Bulldogs are now focused and should be poised to run the table. We can only hope that the line makers keep undervaluing this team.
Louisville -13 @ Memphis The Cardinals are a perfect 6-0 ATS with the only SU defeat at the hands of the Hurricanes. The closest any team, outside of Miami, have been to the Cardinals is 28 points. This team is as good as advertised and will dominate the Tigers from start to finish. Louisville will torch the blitz happy defense and score from long range and short range. Memphis will score some points but not enough to stay with 2 touchdowns.
Memphis exploited the secondary and now you have to wonder about the Cardinal defense, which had been so strong except for the second half against Miami. You know they are going to put some points on the board but can they revert back to covering the big spreads with their defense? We really liked the revenge factor for Louisville but that did not factor into the cover this week for us.
Washington State @ UCLA -13.5 The home team is 6-1 SU and ATS the last 7 meetings in this series. The SU winner in the Rose Bowl the 5 times has won by at least 21 points. The Bruins are solid on offense and just pitched a shutout against Stanford. Washington State has no offense and if they do happen to score a couple of times the Bruins will be hanging 30 plus on them so it will not matter.
A fumble on the opening kickoff followed by an injury to their star running back shortly after, doomed UCLA. The Bruins gave the Cougars the game early then could not stop the running game of Washington State. It did not help losing Drew but the Bruins offense was not what it has been during this winning streak. Bad karma from the get go put the Bruins in a hole that they could not get out.
Texas Tech/Texas A&M Over 65.5 Texas A&M pass defense was exposed last week and will find it tough to stop the Red Raiders aerial attack. Texas Tech will not be able to stop the Aggie balanced attack and the scoreboard will reflect how good both offenses are and both teams should post 40 points plus. This should be a great game to watch if you like to see the offenses run up and down the field.
We were pulling for the overtime and got our wish. Questionable calls in the OT will haunt Texas Tech and cause us some grief. We did not deserve the chance of getting the over but since we got to overtime we thought for sure we would get it.
Alabama +7.5 @ LSU This games features the #1 ranked defense in Alabama versus the #4 ranked defense in LSU. The Tide actually has the better offensive line and will have the opportunity to win this game outright. Neither offense will be able to do much, which sways us to take the 7 points and the better offensive line.
Penalties, turnovers and field position cost the Tide the game and the cover. Both defenses dominated late in the 4th quarter when LSU beat the stunts for some long plays. Don’t want to whine but that no call defensive push for the interception in the endzone changed the entire complexion of this game.
Rice @ UTEP -17 UTEP is by far the better team and there is no look ahead game left for them. They should win the next three games by an average of 28 points. Rice has not won a road game this year and Nevada blew them out the last road game. Look for the Miners to continue their winning ways against a very poor Rice team.
UTEP must have been reading the print about them because there is no way Rice should have been in this game. If UTEP is going to finish this season with 9 wins they must bring it every game or else they will not keep the #2 in the WAC.
Connecticut @ Georgia Tech -9 The road has not been too kind to UCONN as they have dropped their first two games. Georgia Tech has been playing great defense and if Reggie Ball can start playing like he is capable, Georgia Tech could get on a roll. Look for Reggie to get it done this week and the defense of Georgia Tech to contain UCONN.
The Tech defense completely shut down the Huskies. Connecticut scored their only touchdown late in the game. Reggie Ball played out of his mind cutting up the Huskies defense and more importantly he did not throw an interception.
Washington @ Arizona State -13 Arizona State should be able to shut down the Cougar offense while Walters will have a big game against the Cougar defense. Washington State has had no running game until last week and against a very suspect Bruin defense we still think that they have no running game. Arizona State will score early and be able to run away from the Cougars.
Arizona State was due for a big game and they got it Saturday. They crushed Washington State and this game was never in doubt. We didn’t think the Cougars could score enough to stay within the number. A couple of late scores made the score respectable, but we all know that this was a blowout.
Louisville -21 @ Houston The Cardinals have been rolling and should continue the run this weekend. They have only lost one game ATS this season and won by an average of 27 points. Houston will not be able to stop the Cardinal offense as Louisville will continue to post plus 50 points and cover the 21-point spread.
The Cardinals continue to score points whenever they want. Give Houston credit, they stayed around for 2 ½ quarters but could not stop the machine from Louisville and fell well short of the number. I want to see Utah and Louisville in a bowl game. That would be entertaining and well worth the money.
College Football Pick: Maryland @ Virginia Tech -9.5 The ACC title is within reach for the Hokies. They are a great Thursday night team and should completely shut down the poor Maryland offense. The crowd noise will make it even tougher for the Terps and you know who has the better special teams. Randall will do enough on offense to cover the 9.5 points.
Wow! We liked VA Tech but this was too easy for us to believe. Maryland should be ashamed for not showing up at all. The Hokies now head into their final game against Miami for the right to go to the BCS Bowl. Nice booster for confidence for VA Tech. Remember back when we said this team is better than everyone would give them credit for and how they really did play a good game against USC, not USC playing a bad game. Told you so!
College Football Pick: South Florida @ Cincinnati -11.5 Since the Army loss this team has been playing better than any team except for the Cardinals. They face off against Louisville next week but since they know what can happen when they are not focused (Army loss) they will not look past this weekend. The offensive line has been tremendous and will score 40 plus points. We would lay the 11.5 on the road so you know we like them at home. Cold weather team will destroy the boys from Florida.
It took them a while but Cincinnati got it together to put the boys from Florida away. Next week should be a barnburner against Louisville. The Bearcats continue to impress our staff. This offensive line can match up with anyone, except for say Fresno State.
College Football Pick: Wisconsin @ Iowa -3 The Hawkeye’s will take the Badgers down another notch this weekend. Iowa has won 17 in a row at home and should make it 18 especially if Ohio State upsets Michigan earlier in the day. This will be a defensive struggle but the Hawkeye’s will come up with enough big plays and finish off the Badgers Rose Bowl dream.
They have no talent, they win with mirrors, and they do not belong with the elite is all you hear about Iowa, but they continue to win. They have a great defense and you have to be impressed with their quarterback. I hate the Flutie comments; hey this kid is good and needs no comparisons. Having a nice TE and WR does help but this kid just gets the job done. Badgers have to be wondering what the heck has happened.
College Football Pick: Nevada @ Fresno State –23.5 The Bulldogs are back on track and the Wolf Pack is horrible on the road. Nevada has injury problems at the running back position, which means they will have to pass to win this game. They will not be able to pass against the tough Bulldog secondary, which might score as many points as the Nevada offense. This game could get ugly early.
Nevada will have nightmares of this offensive line for a long time. This was just a dominating performance by the hogs from Fresno State. We told you that Nevada was horrible on the road and now they get to go home where they are undefeated this year, too bad they have to play Boise State. Yikes!!
College Football Pick: Cincinnati/Louisville OVER 69.5 Louisville has not been able to stop a good offense but no one can stop the Cardinal Offensive Machine. Cincinnati will come in with a lot of confidence and be able to put points on the board but will have problems stopping Louisville’s offense. This will be a highly entertaining game and should produce over 80 total points. Enjoy this matchup of two quality offensive machines.
The machine rolls on; Louisville has to be kicking itself for the poor second half performance against Miami. This team should be in the BCS but they will have to wait until next year. Missing Gino at QB really hurt any chance Cincinnati had and what the heck were they thinking about as they tried to take the logo before the game? No pre-game fights here, just a butt kicking from the first play of the game.
College Football Pick: Syracuse @ Boston College -11.5 Syracuse will continue to struggle on the road as BC moves into the BCS after this weekend. Boston College will rely on their defense to shut down Syracuse. BC has only given up more than 20 points twice this year and one of those games went into overtime. Syracuse will struggle to score more than 10 points this game.
Two teams with a chance to win a conference title fell on their faces this weekend and we picked both of them. BC will never live this down and it will be a long time before they ever play for a conference title again because they move to the ACC next year. What a blown opportunity. Give Syracuse credit for coming to play for their coach.
College Football Pick: Georgia Tech @ Georgia -15 The Bulldogs have had two weeks to get over their last loss and now Georgia Tech will pay by getting crushed this weekend. Georgia Tech offense will not be able to move the ball and Green will finish his career in style against Georgia Tech. These teams do not like each other and Georgia will not pull the dogs off to be nice. The Bulldogs have outscored the Yellow Jackets 116-31 the past 3 years. The total will be worse after Saturday.
With Green on the sideline, the Bulldogs could not do anything. Heck, they are lucky they got the win. Georgia Tech outplayed them in every category but fell short because their QB’s threw most of their passes three feet short of the WR’s.
College Football Pick: Notre Dame @ USC -23 The Trojans will destroy the Irish for one simple reason, USC is a national champion contender and Notre Dame is a pretender. There will be no luck of the Irish in California and the Trojans will not let up on offense and the defense will shut down the weak offense of the Irish. Two years ago Notre Dame left Los Angeles with a 44-13 loss and it could be worse this year.
The Trojans came out a bit flat but got it going and totally dominated the Irish. Coach Carrol did not leave any doubt in this game as he pulled out all the tricks in the 4th quarter, which aided in the cover. The Irish were out of their league and now will play in a minor bowl game, which is where they belong.
College Football Pick: Virginia @ Virginia Tech -3.5 The Hokies have been good to us this year. They will look to avenge the loss from last year against a team that has struggled against good, fast defenses. We think VA Techs defense falls under that category and with their special teams factor should put up another Win this weekend. The home team is 6-2 ATS in this rivalry. Guess who is at home, VA Tech, take Randall and the boys from Blacksburg to win by more than 7.
The Hokies continue to just win and by the way, cover! Randall looked good again and the defense of Virginia Tech made big plays when they had to. Bring on the Hurricanes.
College Football Pick: Louisville/Tulane OVER 73.5 Tulane has scored at least 32 points in every home game and we all know that the Cardinals can put some points on the board. In fact Louisville has scored at least 55 points the last 4 games and will reach that mark for the 5th straight game this weekend. Louisville will be a little relaxed now that they know they can not bust into the BCS which will result in helping the Tulane offense to keep the 32 points plus streak alive and the game will fly over the total.
We knew the Cardinals would hang 50 plus points but they have been burned by good passing teams all year long. Tulane laid an egg and could only muster up a late touchdown.
College Football Pick: College Football Pick: Colorado/Oklahoma OVER 55.5 The Buffaloes have found their offense the past 3 weeks averaging over 30 points a game. The Sooners will try to run up the score to keep a hold of the number 2 spot in the BCS. Either way, close game in the 30’s each or the Sooners going big with 50 by themselves, this game will go over.
The Sooners needed this win and we thought that Colorado would put up a fight. The Buffaloes looked good on the offensive side but the Sooners defense was excellent all day. This was one of those bad picks.
College Football Pick: Miami (OH) / Toledo OVER 64 We know that the first game only resulted in 39 points but there is so much more at stake in this meeting and the offenses will dictate the tempo of this championship game. Game will be played in a dome and the quickness of both teams will help the big plays come more frequently. Look for both QB’s to have a lot of fun Thursday night.
No way this game should have gone under. Both teams decided to take the 2nd quarter off and blew opportunities in the red zone. This was a good pick that went south on us.
College Football Pick: Tennessee @ Auburn -13 The Tigers beat the Volunteers 34-10 when Tennessee had their full arsenal of QB’s. This time around Tennessee is short on QB’s and will get crushed ass bad if not worse. Auburn needs to look good for any chance of moving past the Sooners in the polls. The Tigers will not hold anything back in their attempt to make it to the championship game.
How the heck could Auburn let Tennessee run all over them? We feel bad that they got the shaft in the BCS but feel even worse that their defense let us down.
College Football Pick: USC/UCLA OVER 59 The past two years this has been an offensive game and this year should be no different. The Bruins will have their starting RB back this weekend, which will help them to put up over 21 points. The Trojans will not be outdone and will not let up in the 4th quarter, witness the Notre Dame game, like other teams do.
Damn Trojans had to settle for field goals and therefore the over was played under. Coach Carroll must have been practicing for the championship game and gave his kicker a workout just in case they need him in a close game. Thanks, would have been nice if they would have worked on getting the damn ball in the end zone. This one hurt.
College Football Pick: Memphis @ Bowling Green –4.5 Bowling had nothing to play for against Toledo and basically quit leading big at half. They were embarrassed in the second half and now Memphis will have to pay. Bowling Green’s Omar Jacobs will light up the poor secondary of Memphis and add to his MAC record of 40 total touchdowns. Bowling Green does have a weakness and that is in the secondary but Memphis will not be able to exploit it enough to cover the spread. The Falcons should win by more than two scores.
The Falcons did win by more than 2 scores because they were able to run and throw at will against the weak Memphis defense. There were a lot of people putting money on the Tigers, line closed at 2.5, and many smart guys saying how weak the MAC is and how they would be over matched. We think the MAC had a great year and they will show how strong they are through out the Bowl season.
College Football Pick: Syracuse @ Georgia Tech –5 Georgia Tech’s defense will dominate this game from the start. The Tech offense will do more than enough to beat a suspect Syracuse defense. Syracuse is a fraud and should not be allowed to play a bowl game because they play in a weak conference and has not been able to play on the road all year. The Orangemen will be exposed by the tough Tech team and add further embarrassment to the Big East.
The defense did set the tone with the early pick six and there was no looking back for Georgia Tech. The Big East is on its way to being totally embarrassed this bowl season. Ball did more than enough for Georgia Tech and we knew the defense would throttle Syracuse.
College Football Pick: Memphis/Bowling Green Over 71.5 Bowling Green has scored over 40 points 8 times this year. As stated above they will not quit at halftime and pour it on against the weak Tiger secondary. Memphis will be able to run the ball and score some points so this will not be a 56-7 game but more like a 63-31 game. Bowling Green will cover and the total will go over.
Well we predicted a 63-31 and it ended up 52-35 so we were not far off. Bowling Green pulled back the reins a bit in the second half because they could have scored 70 if they wanted to. Again many smart guys were saying bet the under, line was at 65 early in the day but we thought both teams would light it up in the sun or in the rain. Here is a tip, bad weather usually will help the offenses and hinder the defenses unless there are strong winds. Rain or snow this would have gone over, hell they put up 63 in the first half in the downpour.
College Football Pick: Connecticut @ Toledo -3.5 Welcome to the Motor City Bowl. Uconn is happy to be in a bowl game as they have come a long way in college football. Toledo is always on the doorstep of making a bowl. Last year they were 8-4 and didn’t make a bowl after two straight years of making a bowl game. They have something to prove this year. The MAC conference has basically owned this bowl going 5-3 SU and 4-3 ATS since the first game in 97'. One more great trend for the MAC is that since 1992, they are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS as a favorite!
College Football Pick: Connecticut 39 Toledo 10 With Uconn earning their first bowl bid ever, one might think a little excitement leads to many mistakes. That wasn’t the case as Uconn dismantled Toledo. It didn’t help Toledo that their QB had titanium screws put into his broken throwing hand but they just didn’t show up to play tonight. Uconn used special teams as well as a solid offense to earn their first bowl victory.
College Football Pick: Fresno State @ Virginia -5 Welcome to the MPC Computers Bowl. If it wasn’t for some late season slip ups, Virginia should have been in a better bowl. Virginia was a powerhouse the first few weeks running the ball. Their rushing attack is one of the tops in the nation. Fresno St. wanted a BCS bid from the very beginning. They even said their season would be a disappointment if they didn’t run the tables in the WAC. An early loss in the season ended their season in their minds. They slept walked through a few games before manhandling teams at the end of the year. Unfortunately, they will not stop Virginia’s running attack. Virginia should run all over Fresno State and really embarrass them. In the last 4 Computer Bowls, the favorite has covered and the designated home team has covered the last 6! Virginia is the home team!
College Football Pick: Fresno St. 37 Virginia 34 In the first half, Virginia just dominated Fresno St. Virginia was up 21-7 and looked to run all over Fresno. But come the second half, Virginia backed off and Fresno took advantage. Virginia couldn’t get anything going while Fresno was unstoppable. Virginia looked like they were going to cover but a TD with 11 seconds left on a 4th and goal helped Fresno take it to overtime where they ended up winning outright!
College Football Pick: Wyoming @ UCLA -12 Welcome to the Las Vegas Bowl. After a dismal last few years, Wyoming made a huge turnaround and are in a bowl game. This team has come a long way since their 1-10 season in 2000. They haven’t finished with more than 4 wins till this year. UCLA started playing pretty solid at the end of the year giving USC a scare at the end of the year. UCLA is a team that relies on their offense to put up major points. Wyoming won’t be able to stop the high powered UCLA offense and the Bruins should walk away with an easy Las Vegas Bowl victory. A trend to look at: the Pac 10 conference is 2-0 SU and ATS in the last two Las Vegas Bowls.
College Football Pick: Wyoming 24 UCLA 21 For a team that has never been to a bowl game, Wyoming showed no signs of nervousness. On paper, UCLA looked like they should have totally dominated Wyoming. Well, that is why they play the games! UCLA took a 21-10 lead into the second half and looked like they were going to possibly squeak out a late cover. But in the end, Wyoming not only made the cover but won outright as well.

Tommy Chang plays his last game in a Hawaii jersey and wants to go out with a bang.
